Putting Together a Great Plus Size Outfit on a Budget

July 29th, 2009

Are you frustrated with operating on a limited budget while trying to find a special outfit for a formal occasion? Try some of the following tips for finding the perfect outfit at a pocketbook-friendly price.

Make sure you look at clearance racks. Most of what you’ll find there is the junk no one wanted to buy last season, but sometimes you’ll also find an unexpected jewel that you can buy for a fraction of the original price.

If you know that you have a special occasion coming up and are looking for the perfect outfit, start shopping early. Shopping in advance will give you the opportunity to check out more stores or even order online. If you wait too long to start looking for the perfect outfit, you will have to settle with what you can find. Most stores offer a plus size section which has a lot less options than the regular size sections. This will leave you with something to be desired. It helps if you can find an outfit that you can use for more than just this one special occasion. Look for a formal dress that you can also wear at work, or to another special event. Having an outfit that can perform double duty is very budget friendly.

It’s important to shop around. If you stick to one place, you won’t know what other options are available and you might pay more than you should. If you can afford to, buy your top at one store and your shoes somewhere else. Unless you feel it is necessary, stay away from the brand names. Many times, brand name clothes are assembled better than similar generic clothes, but this is not necessarily true. It’s very possible that when you buy a brand name piece of clothing you are merely paying for the name. If you are money-conscious, you definitely should be alert to price markups on name brand clothes.

It is tempting to buy an item based only on price. But be careful not to go too cheap, because you want that special occasion garment to last for more than one wearing. You’ll need to be especially careful of this with plus sized garments, since it takes more time and energy to find ones that fit well and look good. Be aware that quality it important. Spend your money on quality garments and you won’t have to buy another one for a long time.

Plan for sales. If you get the store circular for any of your favorite retailers, you’ll be able to wait and do all your shopping when they offer the best deals. These aren’t the only tips for finding a great plus size outfit on a budget, but they’re a place to start. Remember to pay attention to quality and fit, then price, and that the bargain rack can be your friend.
