Help Promote Scar Healing

July 20th, 2010

Scars can be something you’re proud about or a nuisance and an embarrassment you’d like to hide from the world. For those of you who fall into the last two categories, there are ways in which you can reduce the appearance of scar tissue. And with any luck, you can even eliminate certain types of scars forever.

The type of treatment will depend on the type(s) of scar(s) you have and their location. Hypertrophic scars are raised and remain within the affected area while keloid scars are raised scars and spread to the surrounding tissue. Sunken scars are recessed into the skin.

Keloid scars can easily appear anywhere on the body. Sunken scars can also appear anywhere, whereas acne scars are most common on the face. Obviously, raised and sunken scar should be treated differently.

Nevertheless, you should keep in mind that you should only begin your scar removal treatment once the wound has closed.

Treatment Options for Scars Removal

Scar free healing isn’t always possible, but you can expect a reduction of scars if you choose the right scar removal technique.

Laser Resurfacing

Lately, laser resurfacting has become quite popular. Hypertrophic and keloid scars have been treated with this method. Laser treatment has also been used in the treatment sunken scars.

Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery can eliminate the existing scar by removing it completely and replacing it with a smaller scar. The new scar is usually hidden in a fold of the body such as the belly, armpit or behind the ears.

If you have keloid scars, plastic surgery is not for you. It may actually produce more scar tissue.

Steroid Injections

Steroid injections are used to soften and flatten raised scars. If the scar is too severe, you may need a combination of laser therapy and steroid injections.

Pressure Garments

This technique is generally used to treat burn scars. It helps make scars flatter and smoother.

Pressure garments may also be used to treat post-op patients with history of keloid scars. The objective is to maintain the keloid scar in a small a space as possible so that it does not expand.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion slowly helps replace damaged tissue with healthy skin and can be used on all types of scars - except keloids.

Scar Removal Creams

Creams that contain rose hip oil and snail serum have been proven to be effective in reducing the appearance of all types of scars. Rose hip oil is especially successful treating stretch marks.
